TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – First responders from the Topeka Fire Department and Topeka Police Department will donate blood during the fifth annual Battle of Badges blood drive on Thursday.
The badge battle is an annual competition between TFD and TPD to see which department can recruit the most blood donors. Community members who donate blood can vote to determine who will win the bragging rights this year.
“This event is known as the Battle of the Badges, but for me it really is badges,” said Craig Duke, Topeka Fire Chief. “Each year, both departments see this as a special way to serve our community. We are committed to going beyond our daily path to public safety bondage by donating blood. Donating blood is important to our community and I encourage anyone who can to sign up and help save a life.
“The Topeka Police Department is always proud to support the rescue efforts of our local Red Cross,” said Topeka Police Chief Brian Wheeles. “Blood donation has a huge impact on this community at all times, but never more significant than in the summer months. I urge everyone to come out and give the gift of life. Donate blood! The friendly competition with Topeka Fire Department is an added bonus and certainly something we look forward to every year. Vote for TPD and help us collect the trophy. “
The Battle of the Badges blood drive will take place Thursday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Holliday Building at 620 SE Madison.
Individuals of all blood groups can make an appointment and in most cases those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 can donate. If you have been vaccinated and plan to donate, it is important to know what vaccine you received in order to determine eligibility for donation.
You can register for the Battle of the Badges blood drive by downloading the Red Cross blood donation app, call 1-800-RED Cross, or online by clicking here.
